A shared framework for collaboration: Introducing the SIXFOLD Living Lab Memorandum of Understanding

MoU sixfold EU

Collaboration across regions and ecosystems is essential to accelerate the uptake of deep-tech innovations in the agri-food sector. To support this, the SIXFOLD project has developed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) designed for Living Labs and ecosystem actors interested in joining a growing European collaboration framework.

The MoU provides a simple, non-binding structure for cooperation, enabling Living Labs to connect, exchange knowledge and co-create solutions, while maintaining full autonomy and flexibility.

Why a Memorandum of Understanding?

Across Europe, Living Labs play a crucial role in testing, validating and implementing innovations under real-life conditions. The SIXFOLD MoU responds to a clear need expressed by regions and Living Labs: a practical agreement that makes collaboration easier without adding administrative burden.

Rather than creating new obligations, the MoU:

  • Clarifies shared objectives and areas of collaboration
  • Supports alignment around co-creation and Living Lab practices
  • Helps avoid duplication of efforts across regions and initiatives

It is designed as an entry point into the SIXFOLD collaboration framework, not a legal contract.

Building on SS4AF and the Living Lab Network

SIXFOLD builds on the foundations laid by the SS4AF partnership and its network of (food) Living Labs. The co-creation methodology developed through SIXFOLD will continue to be applied, adapted and further developed within SS4AF and its wider Living Lab ecosystem.

This continuity ensures that knowledge, tools and practices developed through previous and ongoing initiatives are not lost, but instead evolve and scale across regions.

What Does the MoU Enable?

By signing the MoU, Living Labs and partner organisations can:

  • Join a transregional Living Lab network focused on deep-tech innovation in agri-food
  • Contribute to and learn from shared barrier cases, such as regulatory, technical or organisational challenges
  • Participate in joint events, study visits and co-creation activities
  • Support the twin transition, linking digital innovation with sustainability goals
  • Improve SME access to testing facilities, expertise and Living Lab services

The MoU also provides a basis for future collaboration in projects, communication activities and joint dissemination - always on a voluntary basis.

A Flexible and Inclusive Approach

Importantly, the MoU is:

  • Non-binding and non-exclusive
  • Open to a wide range of organisations, including Living Labs, regions, universities, clusters and public authorities
  • Designed to complement existing strategies and initiatives

Each collaboration activity can be defined separately, ensuring clarity and transparency for all parties involved.

Interested in Joining?

Living Labs and organisations interested in collaborating with SIXFOLD and its network are invited to review the Memorandum of Understanding and get in touch to explore next steps.
