VEG-i-TEC (UGent)
VEG-i-TEC hosted by UGent and co-chaired by Flanders’ FOOD, HOWEST and VITO is a specialized pilot and living lab focusing on vegetable and potato processing, supporting innovation in fresh and processed plant-based foods.

It addresses the need for sustainable, efficient and high-quality processing technologies with great focus on water and energy management and by-product valorization.
Process & Engagement
VEG-i-TEC collaborates closely with food companies, and their suppliers (such as technology providers), knowledge institutions and sector organizations, using pilot-scale infrastructure to support demonstration, test-before-invest trajectories and applied research.
Success Story
VEG-i-TEC’s pilot-scale processing lines enable companies to validate new technologies and processes in realistic settings, significantly lowering innovation risks for industry partners. A notable success is the ability to capture data allowing process optimization based on a full system integrated overview with insights on product quality, process improvement, capacity increase and energy and water management. This shows a full transparent system overview.
Impact & Results
The living lab has contributed to process optimization, improved product quality and sustainability in vegetable and potato processing, strengthening the competitive position of the Flemish agri-food sector.
Challenges & Lessons
Balancing research, service provision and infrastructure investment requires continuous prioritisation and close alignment with industry needs.
Looking Ahead
Future plans include further technological upgrades, deeper collaboration within the Flanders FOOD Pilot Network, and stronger alignment with European living lab initiatives.
Key Message
Focused pilot expertise in vegetable and potato processing accelerates sustainable innovation across the agri-food value chain.
